How to go back to an earlier version of Brolla

Sometimes you may want to return to a previous version of Brolla — for example if a new version behaves unexpectedly on your machine. You can do this, but there’s one important thing to do first.

Before you start — export a backup of your library

Newer versions of Brolla sometimes update the internal structure of your library (the file that holds your clips, tags and settings). Once a newer version has opened your library, an older version may not be able to open it correctly.

So before you go back a version, always export a backup of your library first. That way, if the older version can’t open your current library, nothing is lost.

To export a backup:

  1. Open Brolla.
  2. Open your Library.
  3. Use Export library… and save the file somewhere safe (for example your Desktop). This saves a full JSON backup of your library.

Keep that backup until you’re sure everything works.

Step 1 — Note your current version

In Settings → Updates, note the version you’re on now (for example “You’re on version 0.8.11”). That’s the version you’d reinstall if you ever want to come forward again.

Step 2 — Download the older version

Use the download link we sent you, or ask our support team for the installer of the specific version you want. We keep previous versions available.

  • Mac: you’ll get a .dmg file.
  • Windows: you’ll get a Setup .exe file.

Step 3 — Install the older version over the current one

  • Mac: open the .dmg and drag Brolla into your Applications folder, replacing the existing one when asked.
  • Windows: run the Setup file and follow the prompts. It replaces your current install.

Your library file itself is not removed by installing — it stays where it is.

Step 4 — Open Brolla and check your library

Open the older version and open your library as usual.

  • If it opens normally: you’re done — you’re now on the older version.
  • If it won’t open or reports a problem: that’s the library-structure issue mentioned above. Reinstall the newer version and open your library with it, or restore the backup you exported using Import library. Then contact support and we’ll help you find the exact version you need.

Staying on an older version

Brolla never installs an update on its own — it only updates when you confirm it (and tick the backup box). So if you’d rather stay on an older version, simply don’t install the update when it’s offered. Whenever you’re ready to move forward, you can update from Settings → Updates.
